Rhuddlan Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Denbighshire, and around two miles south of Rhyl, is the town of Rhuddlan.
The town's name derives from Welsh 'rhudd', meaning red and 'glan', meaning bank or shore, likely referring to the red soil found in the area. It is situated on the eastern bank of the River Clwyd, around 2-3 miles upstream from where it meets the Irish Sea.
In 921 AD Edward the Elder, king of England, made Rhuddlan a burh, i.e. fortified settlement. Prior to the Norman Conquest, it became the seat of government and capital of Gwynedd for the Welsh king Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, who used it as a base for raids into England in the 1060s. In 1073 construction began on a motte and bailey castle here, as ordered by Robert of Rhuddlan, a Norman who became a lord of North Wales.
In 1277 Edward I ordered the construction of Rhuddlan Castle at the end of the first Welsh war to secure lands taken from the Welsh. By 1282 enough of the castle was complete that it successfully defended against an attack by the Welsh. In 1284 a parliament was held in the town, resulting in the Statute of Rhuddlan. This provided the constitutional basis for the government of the principality of North Wales. The statute remained in effect until Henry VIII's Act of Union in 1536. Rhuddlan Castle fended off further attacks from the Welsh, specifically during the early 15th century, led by Owain Glyndŵr. Ultimately, the castle was partially demolished by Parliamentarians during the English Civil War.
In circa 1300, St Mary's Church was built. This replaced an older Norman church from the 1080s. Additions were made during the Tudor era, including a second nave and a tower, perhaps as a consequence of the damage inflicted during the Glyndŵr rebellion. Restoration work was carried out in the 19th century.
Since 1358 a stone bridge has crossed the River Clwyd here. The town was once home to a busy quay which included a foundry and granaries. The quay fell into disuse in the 19th century with the coming of the railway. A station opened here in 1858 courtesy of the Vale of Clwyd Railway. This was a branch line linking Rhyl to Denbigh. It was closed to passengers in 1955, and to goods in 1968. Today, public transport to Rhuddlan consists of direct local bus services from Rhyl, St Asaph, Abergele, Prestatyn, Denbigh and various other nearby settlements.

The place I long to be

My favourite town on the IOW.
StAlbans has everything from iron age ditches, Roman remains, Saxon churches, a Norman cathedral, medieval buildings, such as the old clocktower, and the shops around it , some have quite recent facades but they are all large medieval, Tudor, Jacobean . Our history includes names everyone knows, Julius Caesar fought the local tribe attacked their settlements verulamium and wheathampstead , Boudicca just over a century after Caesar's time , left London following watling street north to verulamium and destroyed it . The Abbey church was attacked raided by Vikings, the first battle of what became known as the war of the Roses started in StAlbans 1455, and a second in 1461 , Cromwell passed through and ordered some of his men to fill the abby church with gunpowder and blow it up , his reasons were ,from top to bottom corner to corner papist carvings and imagery filled it & it was to large to waste time breaking, defacing everything , blowing it up would be easier, but apparently the men got drunk and thankfully bodged the fuses , they left quickly to catch up with Cromwell after spending too much time in StAlbans drinking and whoring. In medieval times it was enclosed by walls and ditches with huge gates that were locked up each night. It became known as 'little London ' . Sadly the local councils past and present can't be bothered to promote the citys 2000+ continuous history, they see it as a hinderance rather than something special, as proven by them selling our 2nd museum which continued the story of our post Roman , Saxon medieval etc, citys history, to property developers who built a couple of unwanted unaffordable ( to all but wealthy outsiders ) luxury apartments. They promised locals they would replace, rehouse and improve on the old museum they sold . ..What we actually got was a coffee/ tea cake shop , with some cabinets on the first floor hallway with random, unidentified, no dates no info objects, artifacts. Less than 0.1% of the artifacts on display at the old museum made it to the 'hallway' above the tea/cake shop, its not a museum its just an afterthought , I honestly have more artifacts found locally with my metal detector, from the late bronze age, the iron age, roman, medieval ,Tudor etc etc and could create a display that tells , shows over 2000 years of our city's history our story . The council do have their own, but they are all in hidden away in boxes in the darkness of the council's storage facilities ,which costs them nothing. They took advice about what to do , show in the 'new museum " from archaeologists the Roman museum, and local historical societies , But ignored everything they said... It's a shame I'm ending on a sad story, such a wonderful ancient city deserves much better. Sadly we have people making decisions who just don't care,
Turns out the Mall is pretty much smaller than Northampton’s. I’ve now changed my mind about paying a visit. Thank you for this virtual tour

A good video of Harleston Walk: Town Centre【4K】👌👌
Much appreciated, thanks!
Near Wadhurst is a small village called "Pell Green" which was home to my Mother and her family - name "Newington". I loved travelling down on the train from our home in London to play in the Countryside with my Grannie, a real country woman. We would shop in Wadhurst and I remember a grocers shop called "International". Thanks for the memory. Brian.
Ah thank you, that's nice to hear!
Lovely town and great video. Whenever I watch something like this I always think how much nicer these places would be without cars. Thank you for the upload though!
Such a busy place in the 1980s
The beginning of your video 0:00 on your right is the The Pembroke Arms which was originally The Brown Bear, i have pass through this town for over 20 years and new mangements have just in recent weeks have just taken over the pub, She could do with your support.
Walk Basildon don't talk crap you will get mugged within a 100 yards. Go to Gaza a lot safer and not so run down.
View from Pensarn Sands gives a wonderful perspective
The council do try to invigorate Basildon but shopping habits have changed and that’s a lot of shops to fill. Bringing the college down was a good idea but building so many flats may not be wise, unless planning is done well. Basildon has lots of potential. I hope it works out.
I used to work at Joseph bentlys hair salon is that still there please you didn't go straight you turned the corner x
Wow red lion Woolworths wimpy all gone and a roundabout appeared
Thank you !
Nothing there not a place I would visit can’t beat Caister on sea and Hemsby
😎
Why would you make a video on a day when the weather is so over cast
This is pretty much the most ridiculous comment I've ever received.
I've noticed there's no police sirens there's no police not like where I live also the place is massive I'm exhausted just looking at the video.
Nice walking video. Thank you Alex.
Appreciated as always, thanks!
